This remixed historical print started with the instantly recognizable “Great Wave Off Kanagawa,” created by renowned Japanese woodblock artist Hokusai in 1831 during the Edo period.
The original woodblock featured a boat filled with sailors hoping to survive a stormy sea. In the original, the boat obstructed the view of Mount Fuji.
For the remix, the artist repaired damaged areas, enhanced colors, and sharpened features of the original before removing the boat and sailors, rebuilding an unobstructed view of Mount Fuji, and adding other creative additions.
Because this remix can be easily mistaken for the original by Hokusai, the artist added a disclaimer in Japanese text that reads:
神奈川沖浪裏ではない
Kanagawa okina miura de wa nai
Which means: “Not the Great Wave Off Kanawaga.”
