Oni Monk

This remixed historical print features a Japanese Oni (a monster like an ogre or troll) disguised as an Edo-period itinerant monk. During that time, some monks would wander the countryside offering prayers for a fee. This “monk” carries all of the appropriate equipment, like the prayer book, hammer, and gong (hanging around his neck) for reciting prayers. The text describes the prayers the monk can offer, including warding off bugs and crying children. The original illustration was digitally repaired and color corrected before additional color enhancements were added.
