Hawai’i Surfing Kappa

The Kappa is a yokai, or supernatural being, from Japanese folklore. Kappa are known for stealing cucumbers. In fact, the popular sushi roll called kappa maki, which contains only cucumber, gets its name from this mythical creature.

This remixed historical print originally depicted a clever kappa stealing a giant cucumber.

The remix artist replaced the cucumber with a surfboard for this Hawaii-meets-Japan-themed mashup. The Japanese characters in the remix say “Hawai‘i”(yellow box), “kappa” (green box), and “surfing” (white box).
